What Happens at Your First Appointment?

Your first visit with us is about understanding your oral health fully before recommending anything. We do not rush through a new patient appointment.

Health History

Before the examination begins, we review your medical and dental history. This includes current medications, any health conditions that affect dental treatment, past dental work, and any concerns you want to address.

Discussion of Concerns

We ask what brought you in and what, if anything, is bothering you about your teeth or mouth. Your concerns shape the examination; we are not following a standard checklist without listening first.

Dental Examination

Your dentist examines all teeth and gum tissue systematically, looking for decay, cracks, gum disease, bite issues, and any other findings that need attention.

X-rays When Clinically Necessary

For most new patients, we take a set of X-rays to get a complete picture of what is happening beneath the surface. We only take X-rays that are clinically appropriate for your situation.

Gum Health Assessment

We measure gum pocket depths and assess the health of the tissue supporting your teeth. Gum disease is common and often found at a first examination; it is not a reason to feel embarrassed, and it is very treatable.

Treatment Recommendations

After the examination, your dentist explains what was found, what needs attention, what can wait, and what the options are. You receive a written treatment plan and estimate before committing to anything.

What Should You Bring?

Being prepared makes your first appointment smoother and helps us get your coverage sorted before you sit down in the chair.

Bring the following to your first visit:

  • Identification — Government-issued ID.
  • Medication information — A list of current medications or your pharmacy's printout.
  • Insurance or CDCP information — Your insurance card, policy number, and any CDCP determination letter or member ID.
  • Previous dental records if available — Not required, but helpful if you have X-rays or treatment notes from your last dentist.

Transferring Records From Another Dentist

If you are switching from another dental clinic, we can request records on your behalf with your written consent. Previous X-rays are particularly useful; they provide a baseline for comparison and may mean you do not need to repeat them immediately.

Contact your previous clinic to request a copy of your records, or ask us to assist with the transfer at your first appointment.


First Appointment for Children

We welcome children of all ages at Mint 32. Children should ideally start dental visits around age one, but any age is the right time to start.

A child's first appointment is usually shorter and gentler than an adult visit. We focus on getting your child comfortable with the environment, checking development, and giving parents guidance on home care. There is no pressure and no rush.

How long is the first appointment?

Allow 60 to 90 minutes for a new patient examination including X-rays. If you have a specific urgent concern, call ahead, and we will plan the appointment accordingly.

Will I receive treatment during the first visit?

Not usually. The first appointment is focused on examination and assessment. If there is an urgent issue like pain or a broken tooth, we address that first. Routine treatment is planned and scheduled after the examination.

Do I need records from my previous dentist?

No. Records are helpful but not required. We will take new X-rays and conduct a full examination regardless. If you have recent X-rays from another clinic, bring them or ask us to request them.

Can I use CDCP at my first appointment?

Yes. Bring your CDCP member ID and determination letter. We will confirm your active coverage and apply it toward eligible services, including the new patient examination.

Can I book for several family members?

Yes. Let us know when you call, and we will do our best to schedule family members at adjacent appointment times to minimize your trips.
