Dental Insurance, Direct Billing and Payment Options in North York

Understanding what dental treatment will cost before you sit in the chair makes a real difference. At Mint 32 Dentistry, we are transparent about fees, explain your coverage in plain language, and do not begin any significant treatment without your approval of the estimated cost first. Our front desk team handles the billing side; you focus on your care.

How Dental Direct Billing Works

Direct billing means we submit your insurance claim on your behalf; you do not pay the full amount upfront and wait for reimbursement.

Claim Submission

We send the claim to your insurer electronically at the time of your appointment. In most cases, the insurer responds within minutes or hours with the amount they will cover.

Insurer Response

The insurer reviews the claim against your plan details, your annual maximum, deductible, co-payment level, and any frequency limits that apply to the specific treatment. Their response determines what they will pay.

Patient Portion

If your plan does not cover the full cost, the remaining balance is your responsibility. We collect this at the appointment once the insurer's response is received.

Unpaid Balances

If a claim is delayed or returned for additional information, we will contact you to resolve it. We do our best to avoid situations where patients face unexpected invoices after leaving the clinic.

Private Dental Insurance

Most private dental plans follow a similar structure, though the specific amounts vary significantly between employers and plan providers.

Key terms to understand in your plan:

  • Annual Maximum — The total amount your plan will pay toward dental treatment in a calendar or benefit year. Once this is reached, any remaining treatment is at your cost until the plan resets.
  • Deductible — The amount you pay out of pocket before your plan begins contributing. Some plans have no deductible; others have an annual deductible per person or per family.
  • Co-payment — Your share of each covered service. A plan that covers 80% means you pay the remaining 20%.
  • Frequency Limits — Most plans restrict how often certain services can be claimed — for example, one cleaning every six months, or one full set of X-rays every two years.

If you are unsure what your plan covers, ask your HR department or call the number on the back of your insurance card before your appointment. We can also help you interpret your plan details when you arrive.

Treatment Estimates and Predeterminations

For larger treatments, we recommend requesting a predetermination, a formal estimate submitted to your insurer before the work is done.

A predetermination tells you in advance what your insurer will cover toward a specific treatment plan. It is not a guarantee of payment, but it gives you a clear picture of your expected out-of-pocket cost before committing to treatment.

We submit predeterminations on your behalf for any significant planned treatment, crowns, bridges, root canals, and other higher-cost procedures. This is part of how we keep billing transparent.

Canadian Dental Care Plan Billing

Mint 32 Dentistry accepts CDCP coverage and submits claims to Sun Life on your behalf.

  • CDCP billing works similarly to private insurance direct billing, with a few important differences:
  • Coverage depends on your active eligibility and current benefit year.
  • Your co-payment level is determined by your adjusted family net income.
  • Some services require preauthorization before treatment begins.
  • Even with 0% co-payment, you may owe a balance if the clinic fee exceeds the CDCP established fee.

We confirm your coverage, explain your expected patient portion, and submit preauthorization where required, all before treatment starts.

How Dental Direct Billing Works

Questions to Ask Your Insurer

Before your appointment, consider asking your plan provider:

  • What is my annual maximum and how much has been used this year?
  • What percentage of cleanings, fillings, and crowns does my plan cover?
  • Is there a deductible I have not yet met?
  • Are there waiting periods for any services?
  • Does my plan cover major restorative treatment like crowns or root canals?

Having this information ready saves time at check-in and avoids surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Mint 32 Dentistry provide direct billing?

Yes. We direct bill most major private insurers and CDCP. Bring your insurance card and policy information to your appointment.

Which insurance plans are accepted?

We accept most major Canadian dental insurance plans including Sun Life, Manulife, Great-West Life, Blue Cross, and Green Shield. Call us if you are unsure whether your specific plan is supported.

Can the clinic guarantee what my insurer will pay?

No. The insurer makes all final decisions about coverage. We submit the claim accurately and provide a predetermination for major treatments, but the coverage decision rests entirely with your insurance provider.

What is a dental predetermination?

A predetermination is a formal estimate submitted to your insurer before treatment begins. It tells you in advance what the plan will likely cover. It is not a guarantee but is the best available estimate of your out-of-pocket cost.

How does CDCP billing work?

We submit your CDCP claim directly to Sun Life at the time of your appointment. Your co-payment level determines your share of the cost. Some treatments require preauthorization before the appointment can be booked.
