What We Treat as a Dental Emergency

If you're in pain or something has happened to your tooth, call us; don't wait to see if it improves on its own.

We provide same-day emergency care for:

What to Do While You Wait for Your Appointment

Acting quickly in the first few minutes of a dental emergency can make a real difference in the outcome.

Knocked-out tooth: Handle by the crown only; do not touch the root. Rinse gently with water and keep the tooth moist in milk or saliva. Get to us within 30–60 minutes for the best chance of saving it.

Chipped or broken tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Save any tooth fragments if possible.

Lost filling or crown: Avoid chewing on that side. A small amount of dental cement from a pharmacy can temporarily protect the area until your appointment.

Abscess or swelling: Do not apply heat. Rinse with warm salt water to manage discomfort, and contact us immediately; oral infections can spread if left untreated.

When Should You Go to the Hospital Instead?

Most dental emergencies are best handled here, but some situations require the ER first.

Go to your nearest emergency room if you experience:

  • Severe facial swelling affecting your breathing or ability to swallow.
  • A broken jaw or significant facial trauma.
  • Uncontrollable bleeding that won't stop.

Once the medical emergency is stabilized at the hospital, contact us to follow up with dental treatment.

Insurance and Payment for Emergency Visits

An unexpected dental emergency is stressful enough — paying for it shouldn't add to that.

Mint 32 Dentistry accepts the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), which may cover emergency dental examinations and essential urgent treatments for eligible patients. We also accept most major private insurance plans and offer direct billing, so you're not paying out of pocket and waiting for reimbursement.

We'll always provide a clear cost estimate before beginning any treatment. If you have questions about what's covered, call us, and we'll check your plan before you arrive.

Important note: We do not use U.S.-based Medicaid or HMO plans. For Ontario patients, relevant programs include CDCP, private insurance, and direct billing through providers such as Sun Life, Manulife, and Green Shield.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a dental emergency?

If you're experiencing pain, visible damage to a tooth, bleeding, swelling, or have suffered trauma to your mouth, that qualifies. When in doubt, call us. We'd rather assess and reassure you than have you wait on something that needs attention.

Can I walk in without an appointment?

You can, but calling ahead is strongly recommended. It allows us to prepare for your specific situation and reduce your wait time significantly. Call 647-351-8338 as soon as possible.

Does CDCP cover emergency dental visits?

Yes, in many cases. Emergency dental examinations and certain urgent treatments are covered under CDCP for eligible patients. We'll confirm your specific coverage when you call.

Are emergency visits more expensive than regular appointments?

The cost depends on what treatment is needed. Simple pain relief or a temporary restoration costs less than a root canal or extraction. We'll walk you through pricing before starting, no unexpected charges.

Should I go to the dentist or the hospital for a dental emergency?

For most dental emergencies, such as toothaches, broken teeth, lost crowns, or abscesses, a dental clinic is the right place. Hospitals generally manage pain and infection, but don't perform dental procedures. Come to us first unless you have severe swelling, jaw trauma, or uncontrollable bleeding.
